Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder resulting from the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. This decline leads to various motor and non-motor symptoms, including tremors, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and impaired balance. Non-motor symptoms can encompass mood disorders, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments. The exact cause of PD remains unclear, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Age is a primary risk factor, with incidence rates increasing notably in individuals over 65.
Recent data from the Parkinson’s Foundation indicates that nearly 90,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with PD each year, a significant increase from previous estimates. Currently, approximately one million Americans are living with Parkinson’s, and this number is projected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030.
At Boone County Health Center, we are committed to supporting individuals with Parkinson’s through specialized programs that enhance quality of life and help manage symptoms effectively. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based programs, including LSVT-BIG, Delay the Disease, and Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!). These therapies are available through formal individual sessions or weekly classes.
Our Rock Steady Boxing class meets every Thursday, offering a non-contact, boxing-inspired workout designed to enhance strength, balance, and coordination. On the last Thursday of each month, we follow the class with an educational group session. These sessions provide valuable information, encourage connections, and offer mutual support—key elements in managing Parkinson’s disease.
Curious about the class? Give us a call to stop by and see if it’s the right fit for you!
