Nursing Scholarship Open to High School Seniors

By: Boone County Health Center

The Marilyn Nissen Nursing Scholarship is open for applications at Boone County Health Center. This is the fourth year this scholarship has been offered.

Registered Nurse Marilyn Nissen was a long-time oncology nurse at Boone County Health Center. Many local patients are alive and well today, because of the care and expertise she offered them. To honor the high value Marilyn placed on education as well as build upon her work at Boone County Health Center, this scholarship is available to assist students pursuing a degree in nursing.

Eligible applicants include high school seniors who have been accepted to, or who have the intent of applying to, an accredited nursing program. Students must be a resident of the Albion, Bartlett, Belgrade, Cedar Rapids, Elgin, Ericson, Fullerton, Greeley, Lindsay, Newman Grove, Petersburg, Primrose, Spalding or St. Edward communities.

The application must include a 250-400 word essay about why the student chose a nursing career, what this scholarship means to them, relevant work experience, and personal and professional goals as a nurse. Applicants are also asked to submit a seven semester high school transcript copy showing academic standing to date.

Two references from faculty who have taught the student within the past two years will also be required. Faculty must know the student’s academic and personal attributes and abilities. These references must complete a special form as well as a letter of recommendation which discusses the applicant’s motivation, completion of assignments, academic abilities and personal traits related to communication and leadership.

Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $250 or $500 to two separate graduating high school seniors. Students with the intent of enrolling in an accredited nursing program will be eligible for $250. Students who have already been accepted into an accredited nursing program will be eligible for $500.
